Kayla Van Skyhawk is a second generation make up artist. She grew up with her mother Shelly Van Skyhawk, who at the time was the principal makeup artist at the PNW Ballet and Seattle Opera house. Kayla spent years observing her mother and her craft which at a early age led her to experiment and pursue her love for hair and makeup artistry.
In the early stages of her education she attended Toni & Guy hairdressing academy and immediately transitioned into a three year apprenticeship at a five star salon. Education and growth has been the core focus of her business and has never fallen short of wanting more. Starting in beauty school she went far beyond the standard curriculum and sought out learning of advanced techniques. After being denied because she was unlicensed, she actively pursued to learn on her own. She successfully was able to teach herself classic finger waves, vintage hairstyling and avant-garde techniques. As a result of her proactive nature, she started her business Skyhawk Artistry at the age of 19.
While attending beauty school, Kayla submitted her first self-produced photo shoots into the TG photographic awards 2012, that landed her first nomination as one of three students in the US for Student category. Just before she graduated, she was showcased on Talk it up TV where her runway model was featured on the front page of the TG runway event online. From there, she developed her love for competitions and styling for runway and TV. Building on that momentum, she continued to promote her work alongside her salon team for New Day Northwest, featuring the newest trends for hair color, cuts and styles. Then in 2014, she was nominated to compete for best newcomer stylist in salons in the Pacific Northwest. She was in charge of a complete transformation from hair color, cut, style, makeup and wardrobe. Her efforts awarded her 1st runner up in the live competition.
After spending 4 years of dedicating herself in the salon, Kayla decided to expand her horizons and relocate to California.
While California primarily traveling between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Kayla has actively been a part of the fashion, film, television, and music industry. She has been regularly hired for personal styling for grammy nominated artists, music videos, feature films, independent projects and magazine editorials. She continues to travel, working for celebrity artists in New York and Las Vegas. In addition to her editorial and film work, Kayla has been the lead hair and makeup artist for TEDx. She has developed a perfect balance between working in her independent salon and continuing education in all aspects of her career.
She would like to thank all of her family and influences along the way for supporting her and helping her turn her dreams into a reality.
